Christmas is the busiest time of year for most retailers. The demand for retail goods spikes after Thanksgiving and then settles to more of a typical pattern after Christmas. But retailers also run many sales during this time period, suggesting that prices, on average are no higher than at other times of the year. In fact, the prices of many goods may be lower. What is the economic rationale behind this?
