Honorary signs are typically placed above and in addition to the regular street signs so it won't make it any tougher for drivers. Typically the honorary designation is not used when giving directions or addresses. It's just that--honorary. Just about every street in downtown Chicago seems to have an honorary designation. No big deal.

One exception of an honorary designation that is used in addresses is Avenue of the Americas in New York City. If that's where you are going and you want your cabbie to know you're a tourist, tell him Avenue of the Americas. If you want him to think you're a local, tell him "Sixth Ave."
