Next week in Sports Economics, we'll be covering the topics of media rights and media fees. In researching for this class, I ran across an almost year-old USA Today article on media rights fees in college football that contains a bevy of useful information. The article also describes how many athletic departments are using the principle of comparative advantage to increase their profitability.
Digression: I know college athletic departments are technically not-for-profit. But I've been around colleges long enough to hear the word "profit" used often enough to know that there are plenty of examples of not-for-profits having profit objectives. Being "not-for-profit" simply puts stipulations on what you can do with those profits in those cases.
