For those who look forward to drinking legally in the US, their 21st birthdays are the thresholds to look forward to.
I grew up in Sioux City, Ia. where Iowa, South Dakota, and Nebraska come together. When I approached the drinking age, I had more things to look forward to. When I turned 18, I could go over to South Dakota and legally buy beer - which I did. When I turned 19, I could legally buy beer and hard liquor in Iowa - which I did. When I turned 20, I could legally buy beer and hard liquor in Nebraska - which I did. When I turned 21, I could legally buy hard liquor in South Dakota - which I did. After that, I didn't think I had anything I could look forward to in that regard. I was wrong.
One of our secretaries remarked that her sister, who turns 55 this week, was looking forward to being able to order from the senior menus at local restaurants.
It stinks getting old.
