According to Weather Underground, it was -24 in Mankato, MN at 7:00 AM this morning. It was -9 in my car at about 1:00 PM this afternoon. It was cold enough to cancel school this morning, but not to shut the local university. Global warming sounds pretty good right now, but I'll settle for a little local warming.
And it sounds like we'll get it soon. Next week's highs should begin in the low 30's. I forecast that the students at the local university will be wearing their spring jackets and playing frisbee outside on campus.
Update: according to the National Weather Service, there have been 19 days so far this winter in Minneapolis where the temperature dipped below zero (compared to 30 days on average for an entire winter), 8 days where it got below -10 (11 is average for a winter), and one day where it got below -20 (2.5 is the average).
